Designing a Modern Welcome: Kathryn Prideaux’s Approach to Seamless Style & Flow
Landscape and interior designer Kathryn Prideaux, founder of Prideaux Design, is known for creating stunning spaces where architecture, nature, and personal style come together effortlessly. Here, she shares her insights on crafting modern curb appeal and designing an entrance that truly reflects who you are.
Creating Harmony Between Indoors & Outdoors
“We all deserve outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of our home,” Kathryn explains. “My goal is always to bring together beauty and function in a way that makes movement effortless. Design is like a thread—connecting spaces, emotions, and experiences through textures, materials, and thoughtful details.”
Her design philosophy centers on creating meaningful transitions—spaces that feel intentional, balanced, and inviting whether you're stepping inside or moving outdoors.
Kathryn’s Essential Design Principles
Be selective: Craft small moments that tell a story.
Be authentic: Let your personal style guide every choice.
Be practical: Choose materials that last.
Be modern: Keep details clean, minimal, and purposeful.
Be playful: Use design to surprise, delight, and reveal.
How to Create a Memorable, Modern Entryway
Entrances and courtyards are key elements in Kathryn’s work. She believes they set the tone for the entire home. Here are her top three recommendations:
1. Master the Art of Conceal & Reveal
A great entrance should give guests tiny visual hints about what awaits inside.
From house numbers and mailbox design to landscape choices and hardscape elements—every detail should reflect the personality of the home. Kathryn likes to build anticipation through subtle clues, guiding visitors toward a final “reveal” that feels both welcoming and intentional.
2. Create a Warm Welcome
Courtyards act as a soft embrace before someone steps inside.
They help guests intuitively understand where to go and offer a comfortable transition between public and private space. Kathryn often uses two sets of house numbers—one near the street and one closer to the door—especially for larger properties. This ensures clarity, reduces confusion, and enhances the visitor experience from the curb all the way to the entry.
3. Use Layers to Shape the Journey
Layering is at the heart of Kathryn’s design method.
She combines different elements—low walls, breezeblocks, tall cacti, steel panels, bold planters, natural boulders, and landscape lighting—to create rhythm and structure. These layers define pathways, frame views, and subtly guide movement.
In each region, she adapts materials and plants to the local climate, ensuring the design feels rooted and harmonious.
Why House Numbers Matter More Than You Think
High-quality, modern house numbers are a non-negotiable detail in every project.
They enhance visibility, add personality, and elevate the entire entryway. She especially values long-lasting materials and craftsmanship—an important factor in environments like Arizona. The combination of durability, clean design, and thoughtful placement makes house numbers a vital part of the overall exterior story.
